The FAT32 partition size limit in Windows 11 has been updated to 2TB by Microsoft with the release of Insider Preview Build 27686 for the Canary Channel.
FAT32 partitions could only hold 32GB because of a limitation that had been in effect for almost 30 years, since Windows 95 was developed.
This limit has now been increased to 2TB when formatting disks from the command line using the ‘format’ command.
Currently, the FAT32 size limit has only been removed from the command line tool. The existing graphical format dialog box will continue to enforce the 32GB limit until Microsoft decides to update this feature.
Windows 11’s GUI-based disk formatting tool is still limited to 32GB, even though the command line now allows FAT32 volumes up to 2TB. The command line or third-party tools will still be needed by users who need to construct larger FAT32 partitions.
This feature is currently available in Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27686. The update will be rolled out to general users after further testing and validation.
